Rwanda
Information on the filing of Patents, Designs and trademarks in Rwanda

PATENT REGISTRATIONS

Patent protection in Rwanda is available via a national filing. Rwanda is a member of the International Convention, but is not a member of PCT.

The requirements for filing an application in Rwanda are as follows:

a) a power of attorney - simply signed;
b) a copy of the specification (including claims, abstract and drawings) in the French language; and
c) a certified copy of the priority application with a verified translation thereof into the French language.

Document b) is required on the day of filing, document c) must be filed within 3 months, and there is no set deadline for the filing of document a).

The cost of filing a patent application in Rwanda is currently in the region of between about US$ 2200.00 and US$ 2400.00 assuming we are provided with French versions of documents b) and c). To this must be added about US$ 60.00 for each claim over 10 and about US$ 60.00 for each priority claim.

Should it be required, we can assist with the preparation of any translation from English to French at a cost of US$ 30.00 per 100 words.

 

TRADEMARK REGISTRATIONS

1. Filing requirements

1.1 Full name, street address and description of the applicant (including trading style, if any, and state/country of incorporation, if incorporated).
1.2 List of goods and/or services.
1.3 A simply signed power of attorney.
1.4 10 prints of the mark.
1.5 Printing block, even for word marks.
1.6 If Convention priority is claimed : a certified copy of the basic application, together with a verified French translation thereof.

2. Classification

2.1 The 42 classes of the International Classification of goods and service are followed.

3. General

3.1 Duration : Unlimited.
3.2 Use : Not compulsory.
3.3 Marking : Not required, but advisable.
3.4 Licenses : No provision to record licenses officially.
3.5 Assignments of applications are permitted.

4. Costs

4..1a Application: 1 - 3 classes $1260, additional classes over three filed simultaneously $820.00 each.
4.1b Claiming priority: $150.00
4.2 Assignment: First trade mark/class $810.00, additional trade marks/classes filed simultaneously $430.00 each.
4.3 Preparation of documents: $130.00.
4.4 Recordal of change of name or address: First trade mark/class $470.00, additional trade marks/classes filed simultaneously $310.00 each.
4.5 Licenses: First trade mark/class $710.00, additional trade marks/classes filed simultaneously $360.00 each.
4.6 Renewal: First class - no renewals payable.
4.7 Search: 1 mark in 1 class: $160.00

Design Registration

Design protection in Rwanda is available via a national filing. Rwanda is a member of the International Convention.

The requirements for filing an application in Rwanda are as follows:

c) a certified copy of the priority application.

Document b) is required on the day of filing, document c) must be filed within 3 months, and there is no set deadline for the filing of document a).

The cost of filing a design application in Rwanda is currently in the region of between about US$ 2000.00 and US$ 2200.00. To this must be added about US$ 60.00 for each priority claim.
